The purpose of the Santiago Regional Workshop was to discuss, from a regional perspective, the need and priorities for new scientific and technological advances responding to the challenges of sustainable development. The Workshop was intended to be an informal, intellectual process, acting as a laboratory of ideas. Invited participants included 30 individuals from the countries of the region -- natural and social scientists, technologists, specialists on social studies of science, and representatives from national scientific organizations and from business. Participants were to act in their personal capacity, not as governmental or institutional delegates. The workshop addressed core scientific questions, methodological challenges, research strategies, and institutional innovations relevant to science and technology for sustainability.
