13 November 2001 - 15 November 2001 Abuja, Nigeria
Sponsors/Organizers Organized locally by the Nigerian National Committee on Sustainability Science Chaired by Professor Akin L. Mabogunje, Development Policy Centre, Ibadan, Nigeria
From 13-15 November 2001, scientists from north, south, east, west, and central Africa met to deliberate on Africa's priorities in the emerging initiative on sustainability science. This Workshop was necessitated because of the growing international concern about seeking new and deeper understanding of the complex interactions between human society and the environment. This regional workshop provided a forum for African scientists in both the environmental and the social sciences to begin to grapple with the challenges of this new paradigm. The objective of the workshop was to initiate the process of developing new capacity for defining regional priorities and promoting a broadly based consensus on new research, monitoring, assessment and decision support activities. Its other objective was to stimulate the identification of regional priorities in preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio+10).
