Jane Lubchenco is the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology at Oregon State University. Her research focuses on rocky intertidal shores and nearshore coastal ecosystems, with special emphasis on the ecology of seaweeds, plant-herbivore interactions, and community dynamics. Lubchenco served as president of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She led the efforts of ESA to set national priorities for ecological research and provide ecological expertise to national policy makers. Lubchenco also co-coordinated part of the United Nations Environment Programme's Global Biodiversity Assessment. She serves on the scientific steering committee for Religion, Science and the Environment, an international partnership of scientists and religious leaders to promote environmental stewardship. Lubchenco chairs the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program, a project operated on behalf of ESA to train environmental scientists to be effective communicators and leaders. She serves as principal investigator for a new research, teaching, and policy consortium whose focus is the nearshore coastal region of Oregon and California. She is a member of the Council of the National Academy of Sciences and the president of the International Council for Science. She currently participates in advisory committees for the National Research Council, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the Pew Charitable Trusts, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, National Public Radio, the National Geographic Society, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Lubchenco was named Oregon Scientist of the Year in 1994 by the Oregon Academy of Sciences, a Pew Scholar in Conservation and the Environment in 1992, and a MacArthur Fellow in 1993. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. Lubchenco was appointed to the National Science Board in 1994 and reappointed in 2000.
