Mrs. Susan Harris is an environmental scientist trained at Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand, where she graduated with BSc(Hons), in Zoology in 1983. In 1986 Susan joined the NZ Government as an environmental scientist, working on energy developments, agriculture, horticulture, and conservation science projects for three years. Then from 1986-1992 she was a marine scientist and planner (MNZPI) for a regional environmental authority, overseeing local government consents issued for land, harbour, infrastructural and water developments. Since 1992 Susan has been in private practice as a consultant environmental scientist and planner. From 2000-2005 she led a privately-funded research project aimed at developing a robust system for "Green Tick" sustainability certification of goods and services, based on "cradle to grave" assessments according to the pertinent ISO protocols for project management, environmental management, and conformity assessment.  Since December 2005 Susan has been Principal Environmental Scientist for Maunsell Australia Pty Ltd in Perth, Western Australia.  Maunsell is part of the global AECOM network, and sustainability has been adopted as one of the four key pillars of AECOM's services to its clients around the globe. Susan is part of a team offering sustainable development advice and "Green Tick" sustainability certification services to government and corporate clients in Western Australia and abroad through the AECOM network.

Does Sustainability Sell? Market Responses to Sustainability Certification.

Abstract

Consumers have few means for clearly identifying genuinely sustainable products at point of sale. Green Tick Sustainability Certification provides independent sustainability certification using full life cycle assessment of products.  In April 2005 22 household products with "Green Tick" Sustainable" certification were trialled throughout New Zealand, and in August 2005 "Green Tick Natural" certified lamb was trailed in retail outlets in Queensland, Australia.  This paper reports on market responses to these two projects in terms of sales patterns, competitor responses, and consumer reactions to the certified products. Paper submitted for publication in the Journal of Management of Environmental Quality.
