Dr. Barbarán is a researcher who was born in Salta, Argentina, on September 2, 1960. At the National University of Salta (Argentina), he received the following degrees: Licenciate in Natural Resorces (1986), Engineer in Natural Resources and Environment (1998), and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (2000). His research focus is wildlife use and sustainability assessment. In his Ph.D. thesis, he analyzed the ecological, economic, social and institutional dimensions of sustainability related to the commercial use of a lizard (Tupinambis sp.), an ostrich (Rhea americana) and a wild pig (Pecari tajacu) in Argentina's Semiarid Chaco. He created a new method to assess sustainability: the command board of sustainability, applying business concepts for monitoring ecosystems trends through use indicators. He is working in the Calchaqui Valley of Salta Province studying subsistence and commercial trapping, as a researcher of Argentina's National Research Council (CONICET).
