This paper presents the consensus conclusions of the Mexico City Synthesis Workshop on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development. The Workshop brought together leaders of, and participants in, more than a dozen fact-finding studies, discussions, conferences, and workshops conducted by the international scientific and technology community over the two years leading up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). It reviews the past and potential contributions of the S&T community to sustainable development, and argues that a "new contract" is emerging between science and society for sustainable development. It identifies several specific steps and institutional innovations required to implement this contract, including increasing the demand for and supply of S&T, focusing on place-based socio-ecological systems, partnerships with the private sector, and capacity building. The paper also sets an agenda for next steps for S&T in service of sustainability, arguing that the core methods and empirical foundations of S&T for sustainability need to be strengthened, and partnerships need to be developed.
