Description:

Arizona’s water challenges are similar to those faced in arid environments around the world: sustainability in the face of drought and continued population growth; water quality, safety and security; inadequate hydrologic and planning information; maintaining healthy ecosystems and watersheds; and providing high quality supplies and treatment systems to sustain high technology industries. The solutions to these issues combine social, natural and physical science, including a focus on water policy, water management and law, as well as developing new data, tools and techniques for decision-makers.

Developing sound water policy requires both excellent science and careful consideration of the complexities of the natural, economic, political, social and legal forces that affect water availability and use. This information must then be incorporated into the decision-making processes of governments, water practitioners and businesses. AWI will provide the bridge between science and policy decisions by working with the private sector, federal government and public partners.
