Maurie Cohen is Associate Professor of Environmental Policy and Sustainability at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and the editor of Sustainability: Science, Practice, and Policy (http://ejournal.nbii.org). He holds a joint affiliation with the Division of Global Affairs at Rutgers University and is a 2006 AT&T Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellow. Dr. Cohen has held prior positions at Binghamton University (State University of New York), the Oxford Centre for the Environment, Ethics and Society (Mansfield College, Oxford), and Indiana University.

Maurie's technical training is in urban planning and regional science and his current research is situated within the field of environmental social science. His principal project at present is centered on the future of mobility and he seeks to identify potential pathways of sociotechnical evolution away from prevailing modes of automobile dependency. Some of these potential trajectories might be deemed to be more sustainable—for instance the substitution of information and communications technologies (ICT) for physical transportation. However, there are also alternatives emerging—for instance the growing trend toward personal aeromobility—that are likely to pose significant challenges for a more sustainable future

Current work on mobility evolves out of interests in sustainable consumption and his book (co-edited with Joseph Murphy) Exploring Sustainable Consumption: Environmental Policy and the Social Sciences provides a key point of departure. His other books include Risk in the Modern Age: Science, Social Theory, and Environmental Decision Making and The Exxon Valdez Disaster: Readings on a Modern Social Problem (with J. Steven Picou and Duane Gill).
