The theme recognizes that a robust and efficient transportation system is necessary in order for the nation to successfully meet the economic, environmental, and security challenges that lie ahead. Spotlight sessions and workshops are expected to explore key issues and challenges such as achieving climate change and energy security targets by 2050; enhancing and preserving the nation's transportation infrastructure; and eliminating congestion as we know it. In addition to the general calls for papers produced by many of TRB's standing committees, authors are invited to submit papers related to the upcoming Annual Meeting's spotlight theme. This year, papers will be accepted only in PDF format. All papers must be submitted via TRB's Paper Submission website by Saturday, August 1, 2009.Washington, D.C) MS Assistantship in Population Water Quality and Land Use Trends (A graduate research assistantship (M.S.), including tuition waiver and stipend, is available for Fall 2008 in the Department of Natural Resources Science at the University of Rhode Island to develop, quantify and analyze the relationships among water quality trends, land use change and demographic change in Rhode Island. In recent decades, parts of Rhode Island have experienced significant population growth and development, but density and other factors vary widely across the state, as does the rate of change. The student will pursue a graduate degree in the department of Natural Resources Science at the University of Rhode Island (http://nrs.uri.edu/). The graduate student will need the skills to organize and analyze large demographic and water and land use data sets. Applicants must have at least a 3.2 GPA and must have taken the GRE.To apply please submit the following: a letter stating your qualifications and research interests, resume or CV, college transcripts, GRE scores, and 3 letters of reference by no later than 15 July 2008 (early application is encouraged!) to Dr. Fred Meyerson, Dept. Integrated assessments use findings, data, and methods across different disciplines to generate information about a particular issue. For example, to assess the impact of mercury on public health and the environment, EPA integrated results from air dispersion models, exposure models, health effects models, and economic models (EPA 2005). To facilitate integrated assessments, models are used either (1) as a single, overarching model that integrates all pertinent information; or, as in EPA's impact assessment for mercury, (2) as a suite of multiple models, with each model focusing on a specific aspect of the integrated assessment. In either case, NCER is interested in research that explores two types of uncertainties: (1) uncertainties within the models themselves, i.e. within their underlying data and hypotheses; and (2) uncertainties that arise during decision-making, as stakeholders discuss the weight of scientific evidence embodied within these models.)
