Assessment
30th Annual
Conference of the International Association for Impact
Assessment
6-11 April,
2010
Geneva,
Switzerland
To transition toward green
economies, assessments must first demonstrate the types of green investments
that best fit local, national, and regional environments. Impact assessments
have the power to influence and shape green policy, which will in turn play a
major role in addressing the global crises. IAIA10 will focus on the following
sectors that have the potential for sustainable green investment:
Agriculture
Industry
Tourism
Cities
Transport
The objective of IAIA10 is to
provide policy makers with tools to help address the global crises. In light of
the urgency, the time for action is now. The response by conference
participants and IAIA must be both practical and creative.
In addition to engaging theme
forums, plenaries, and concurrent sessions, training courses and technical
visits will also be offered. For more information on IAIA10 or to be notified
of updates, click the IAIA10 link at www.iaia.org or contact impact@iaia.org. Geneva,
Switzerland) Full Professor in the field of Environment Governance and Planning (Utrecht University’s Faculty of Geosciences (The Netherlands) offers education and research concerning the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and anthroposphere. With a population of 2.200 students (BSc and MSc) and 575 staff members, the faculty is a strong and challenging organisation. The Faculty is organised in four Departments: Innovation and Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, and Human Geography and Spatial Planning. The Department of Innovation and Environmental Sciences is responsible for Education and Research on relations between humans and the environment, environmental policy and its influence on sustainable development, and the management of innovation. The Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning focuses on the effects of social, economic, cultural, demographic and political developments on human spatial behaviour and the geographic distribution of people. We seek:The above mentioned departments are currently seeking applications for a Full Professor in the field of Environment, Governance and Planning. The chair has a scope of 1,0 fte and is equally sponsored by the Department of Innovation and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning. The successful candidate will be employed within the Department of Innovation and Environmental Sciences.Profile:The chair focuses on the rapidly evolving scientific field of governance for sustainable development. The chair holder will lead the research program entitled ‘Environmental Governance for Sustainable Development’, which is a joint program between two research groups with different backgrounds: the Environmental Studies and Policy group and the Urban and Regional Planning group. The objective of the research program is to further our understanding of how and why different – often co-existing – modes of governance either do or do not result in (environmentally) sustainable outcomes. Sustainable development goals are pursued through a multitude of different modes of governance. These vary from traditional top-down government steering to the self-regulation of business organizations. Apart from analyzing and explaining each of these modes, we also study shifts in modes of governance. On that basis, the program seeks to make a relevant and significant contribution to the policy debate by formulating recommendations about interventions that have the potential to make governance outcomes more congruent with sustainability goals. We are taking on the challenge to give research in this area a more empirical focus in order to learn from practice. In this sense this research program is in line with the empirical-analytical tradition of both research groups. The chair holder will be responsible for this new program and we expect her/him to direct the program to an internationally oriented excellent interdisciplinary position. The chair holder will thus strengthen the international character and visibility of the two participating groups, both in science for science as well as science for policy arenas, and will give a boost to the educational programs. Teaching will mainly be in the masters programs Sustainable Development and Urban and Regional Planning. The candidate holds a doctoral degree and has proven strong expertise in the field of environmental sciences, environmental governance and/or urban and regional planning (excellent publication record including publications in top research journals). Preference is for candidates with a firm empirical basis and sound knowledge of quantitative techniques. The candidate has excellent teaching skills and he/she is an enthusiastic team player with proven success in building bridges. In addition to proficiency in English, fluency in Dutch is an asset, but not a condition: candidates who do not speak or understand Dutch are expected to be able to communicate in Dutch within two years. We offer:The candidate is offered a full time appointment for an unspecified period. The gross salary is based on scale "Professor 2" (min. € 4,904.- and max. € 7,142.- gross per month). The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition we offer a pension scheme, a collective health insurance and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities.Information:Further information is available from the chairman of the search committee, Prof Dr M.J. the focal topic for the 5th Urban Research Symposium to be held in Marseille,
France from June 28-30, 2009. The Symposium is being organized by the World Bank
in conjunction with some key partners.
The Symposium is looking for papers based on identified research clusters
(illustrated below). The overall objectives of these papers are:
To examine the current applied urban research and practices on cities and
climate change, in developing and transition economies as well as developed
countries;
To identify knowledge gaps in current research; and
To contribute to a focused urban research agenda to guide collaborative
efforts in this area.
The Symposium is aimed at presenting current and steering future research on
topics that address city-specific questions by taking into account the
complexity of urban systems. The research questions under each cluster should be
approached in an inter-disciplinary manner to include: (a) Climate change
science, that is the expected changes in temperature, precipitation and the
incidence of extreme events, downscaling climate scenarios, impact of cities
emissions on GHG and the impact of climate change on cities; (b) Social and
economic impacts of climate change, that is the interactions between urban
expansion, vulnerability and resilience to climate change, including urban forms
and sprawl, impact on public health, urban poverty, and human settlements; and
(c) Urban policies and practices, that is land use and planning, housing
policies, building codes, transportation policies, participation, and
governance.
Papers on each of the five clusters will include contributions on (a) diagnosis
of specific issues and their components; (b) analysis and approaches; (c)
experiences and concrete cases of current policies and practices in cities and
the reasons for success; (d) extracting lessons, analyzing conditions for
scaling-up, and creating action plans to deal with climate change-related
issues. It is expected that the lessons associated with each cluster will
provide the basis for a multi-donor coordination/effort to deal systematically
with cities and climate change and to mainstream these concerns in their
national and regional assistance strategies.
Researchers are encouraged to look at cities and urban areas as integrated
systems and to mention how their proposals, while focused on a given cluster,
would interact with themes in other clusters. Please refer to the Concept Note
of the 5th Urban Research Symposium (available at www.urs2009.net) for further
background.Marseille,

The competition is open to all individuals and organisations, including central and local governments, NGOs, community-based groups, research organisations and the private sector.
Each year a panel of international judges assesses the projects entered for the competition and selects two winners. An award of £10,000 is presented to the winners at the annual United Nations global celebration of World Habitat Day.
Across Africa we have seen examples that include community-led savings groups working to secure affordable land and shelter for low-income urban households in Namibia, the development and adaptive re-use of inner-city buildings in Johannesburg, South Africa and the development of vault and dome roofed housing and livelihood opportunities across the Sahel. Each example puts forward practical, innovative and sustainable approaches with the potential for adaptation and transfer. Further details of these and many other projects can be found on the World Habitat Awards website at www.worldhabitatawards.org.Any) |
