IDS Research Fellows in Agriculture, Science and Policy (The IDS is a leading global institution for research, teaching and communications on international development, based at the University of Sussex campus in Brighton, UK.The Knowledge, Technology and Society (KNOTS) Team of IDS is seeking to appoint up to two new Research Fellows as part of an expanding programme of research on African agriculture and development, with a particular focus on the governance of science, technology and innovation and the politics of policy processes. The post will combine research with teaching and policy support. In association with the Future Agricultures Consortium (www.future-agricultures.org) and the STEPS Centre (www.steps-centre.org), and together with partners in Africa and the EU, the new Research Fellow(s) will develop work in Africa among the following themes:Agricultural innovation systems Participatory approaches to agricultural research and developmentThe governance and regulation of new agricultural technologiesThe politics of policy processes surrounding technology development in agricultureAgroecology and ecosystem servicesAgriculture-water-health interactionsAgriculture,  land, livelihoods and the dynamics of environmental, socioeconomic and technological changeApplicants will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) with a strong research and publications record focusing on the social and political dimensions of agricultural change, including extended field experience.  Experience of coordinating diverse collaborative research teams and raising research funds from different sources is required. Direct experience with cereal seed systems, livestock systems and/or agroecological systems and their environmental, socio-political and technological contexts will be an advantage. Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize in Sustainability Science (TWAS and illycaffè s.p.a. have instituted a high-level prize to honour distinguished scientists from developing countries. The Trieste Town Council and the Trieste International Foundation for Scientific Progress and Freedom are collaborating in this effort.The prize, called the 'Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize' to honour the late former President of illycaffè, will focus on sustainability science. The prize is awarded annually and rotate among the following fields: Climate change and its impact on agriculture in developing countries (2009) Energy (2010) Materials science (2011) Human health (2012) Each prize carries a monetary award of US$100,000 generously contributed by illycaffè, a trophy and a certificate bearing a citation highlighting the major contributions for which the prize is awarded. The annual prize will be presented to the recipient at a special occasion arranged by TWAS, illycaffè and the Trieste Town Council.Eligibility Candidates must be nationals of developing countries, working and living in the South. The prizes will only be awarded to individuals for scientific research of outstanding international merit carried out at institutions in developing countries. Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Sustainable Urban Food Studies (Eugene Lang College, the New School for Liberal Arts seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow in sustainable urban food systems for the 2009-2010 academic year to assist in research, curriculum development, and public programming coordination within the University's new Environmental Studies Program. Under the supervision of one or more environmental studies faculty members, the fellows will develop and teach a survey course and one course based on their area(s) of expertise and dissertation topic. Post-Doctoral Fellow in Sustainable Urban Food Systems:The Andrew W. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellow in sustainable urban food systems will work with faculty in environmental studies, food studies, and external colleagues to design and implement a research project in sustainable urban food systems that matches his/her interests and expertise. One-month Postdoctoral Fellowships with the STEPS Centre (The ESRC STEPS (Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability) Centre is a global research and policy engagement hub based in Sussex, drawing together researchers at the Institute of Development studies (IDS) and SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research) with partners in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The STEPS Centre’s overall goal is to help link technology and environmental sustainability with poverty reduction and social justice, in ways that work amidst the complexity, diversity and dynamism of today’s world. The Centre works across three themes (dynamics, governance, designs) and three domains (food and agriculture, health and disease, water and sanitation), and through a variety of field-based projects (see www.steps-centre.org). We are pleased to offer the opportunity for postdoctoral researchers to engage with the STEPS Centre during a one month period based in Sussex. To apply, from any part of the world, you should have completed your doctorate within the last three years. 6 Theme Leaders for CCAFS Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS is a major collaborative endeavour between the international agricultural (CGIAR) and global environmental change (Earth System Science Partnership, ESSP) research communities. The Program is launched in 2009 for a period of 10 years.This new Program is now seeking candidates for the six positions of Theme Leader, which will provide continuity of vision and intellectual leadership for their given Research Theme, and share responsibility for integrating Theme research into the overall CCAFS. The six Themes are: Diagnosing vulnerability and analysing opportunities Unlocking the potential of macro-level policies Enhancing engagement and communication for decision-making Adaptation pathways based on managing current climate risk Adaptation pathways under progressive climate change Poverty alleviation through climate change mitigation The Theme Leaders will be appointed by the CCAFS Steering Committee and will report to the CCAFS Director. Theme Leaders will be appointed on a part-time (=50% of time) or full-time basis. Director of Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture (owa State University is seeking an outstanding scientist and administrator to direct the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, established by the 1987 Iowa Groundwater Protection Act (Iowa Code Chapter 266). The Center contributes, through research, outreach, and education, to the development of sustainable agriculture production systems that are environmentally sound, socially acceptable, and economically competitive. The Center also informs the agricultural community and general public of its research findings.
