Email: daniel.maxwell@tufts.eduTufts University, Boston, MA) Postdoc Researcher in coupled human environment systems (Applications are invited for a post-doctoral
researcher to work at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development
in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) on a project investigating coupled
human-environment systems in selected areas of rural China.
Specifically, we are looking for researchers with
interests in spatial modeling of human-environment interactions. We will
use methods that integrate natural and social science approaches to
proxy alterations in human welfare levels and changes in local and
regional environmental indicators over time and space. Possible
methodologies may include spatially explicit statistical approaches as
well as Bayesian network analyses to estimate the determinants of and
the linkages between observed environmental changes and rural welfare
levels. The results of the project are expected to shed light on the
human-environment interactions in rapidly changing circumstances in
order to propose adequate policy and management options. The successful
candidate should have a strong background in the application of
quantitative analysis of economic, social, and/or ecological systems.
(S)he should preferably speak Chinese language and/or have previous
work experiences in China.Halle (Saale), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) Call for Papers Population and Climate Change (Population
and demographic patterns are linked to many aspects of climate science and
policy, including greenhouse gas emissions trends, mitigation opportunities,
and adaptation strategies. Population
growth and changes in geographic, age, income, economic and consumption
distribution are critical influences on climate. In addition, increasing demands for food,
fuel, forest cover, and other land uses affect policy options available for the
reduction and mitigation of emissions. However,
scientific understanding of these associations remains underdeveloped
For
this special issue, we seek a range of
papers that examine the linkages between human population and climate change at
various scales (global, regional, national, household) and lead to improved understanding
and theory. We encourage contributions
based on quantitative as well as qualitative data, including projection-based
papers, as well as those that focus on population policy and analysis.) High Level Interdisciplinary Opportunities in the Office of Research and Development (EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) is seeking internationally recognized scientists to fill three
positions in the National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL).
One position (01) is located in Ada, Oklahoma and two positions (02,
03) are located in Cincinnati, Ohio. NRMRL's leadership in science and
engineering is recognized throughout EPA and the environmental
community as the source of responsive, objective solutions to complex,
multidisciplinary environmental problems. More information about NRMRL
can be found at www.epa.gov/nrmrl/.
ORD plans to fill these positions using EPA's Title 42 Authority, which
offers up to 5-year renewable appointments at highly competitive,
market-based salaries. The positions are part of a larger EPA effort to
use state-of-the-science approaches and technologies in its mission of
protecting human health and the environment. The ideal candidates will
have a doctoral-level degree and extensive specialized experience.
Positions and major duties include:
NRMRL-09-42-01 Director, Ground Water and Ecosystems Restoration

As the vulnerability of poor and marginalized communities is often exacerbated by “market solutions” to climate change, the Climate Justice Research Project seeks to develop tools and analysis that will ensure climate change mitigation will occur in a just and equitable manner. The project draws a comprehensive picture of regulatory and economic development approaches to climate change, existing and planned; it will identify gaps in those resources and suggest new tools to steer change.Fellow: The project seeks two full-time post-doctoral research fellows to use current data to study the emergence of US carbon markets’ and their potential effects on low-income and marginalized communities; and to a lesser extent how US carbon markets are interlocked with existing international markets. The project is especially interested in the ways in which regulation, compliance and enforcement in emerging carbon trading markets shape chances for climate justice oriented policy making. Post-doctoral research fellows will analyze policies with a justice/equity focus towards understanding alternatives to market-only approaches which better facilitate carbon emissions reductions, green economy revenue generation, and confront a host of other institutional issues to avert worsening climate change impacts on vulnerable and marginalized people. Each grant-funded position involves a combination of research, co-teaching and fundraising. It requires a commitment to, as well as knowledge of and experience in, action research, multi-stakeholder processes, and participant observation. It also requires familiarity with and some experience in multilateral negotiations. Candidates must be available to take part in domestic and international travel to relevant and related climate meetings. The position starts July 1, 2009 (the start date has limited flexibility). It is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal, pending year-end review and further funding.Successful candidates would work under the direction of professor Michael K. Dorsey (Principal Investigator) and in association with the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College.Qualifications: Ph.D. (completed no later than start date) or equivalent in Environmental Policy, Geography, Policy Studies, Environmental Studies or Science with an emphasis on policy, political ecology, economics, environmental anthropology/ethnology, environmental sociology and/or regulatory concerns.Application: Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience; benefits are included. The application should include a short introductory letter accompanied by 1) a two- to four-page statement of research goals and the relationship between the candidate's goals and this program of research; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) three letters of recommendation including at least one from a dissertation advisor; and 4) at least one sample publication. These should be mailed or emailed to (electronic submission is preferred): Dr. Michael K. Centre, University of Sussex, Brighton, UK) Call for Papers Urban Research Symposium 2009 (Cities and Climate Change: Responding to an Urgent Agenda has been selected as
the focal topic for the 5th Urban Research Symposium to be held in Marseille,
France from June 28-30, 2009. The Symposium is being organized by the World Bank
in conjunction with some key partners.
The Symposium is looking for papers based on identified research clusters
(illustrated below). The overall objectives of these papers are:
To examine the current applied urban research and practices on cities and
climate change, in developing and transition economies as well as developed
countries;
To identify knowledge gaps in current research; and
To contribute to a focused urban research agenda to guide collaborative
efforts in this area.
The Symposium is aimed at presenting current and steering future research on
topics that address city-specific questions by taking into account the
complexity of urban systems. The research questions under each cluster should be
approached in an inter-disciplinary manner to include: (a) Climate change
science, that is the expected changes in temperature, precipitation and the
incidence of extreme events, downscaling climate scenarios, impact of cities
emissions on GHG and the impact of climate change on cities; (b) Social and
economic impacts of climate change, that is the interactions between urban
expansion, vulnerability and resilience to climate change, including urban forms
and sprawl, impact on public health, urban poverty, and human settlements; and
(c) Urban policies and practices, that is land use and planning, housing
policies, building codes, transportation policies, participation, and
governance.
Papers on each of the five clusters will include contributions on (a) diagnosis
of specific issues and their components; (b) analysis and approaches; (c)
experiences and concrete cases of current policies and practices in cities and
the reasons for success; (d) extracting lessons, analyzing conditions for
scaling-up, and creating action plans to deal with climate change-related
issues. It is expected that the lessons associated with each cluster will
provide the basis for a multi-donor coordination/effort to deal systematically
with cities and climate change and to mainstream these concerns in their
national and regional assistance strategies.
Researchers are encouraged to look at cities and urban areas as integrated
systems and to mention how their proposals, while focused on a given cluster,
would interact with themes in other clusters. Please refer to the Concept Note
of the 5th Urban Research Symposium (available at www.urs2009.net) for further
background.Marseille,
France) ICRAF Climate Change Leader (The
World Agroforestry Centre seeks to recruit a world-class researcher to
lead its Global Research Project (GRP) on Climate Change.
Agricultural
systems most vulnerable to climate change are those already affected by
unsustainable management, and land and resource degradation. Trees have
an important role in reducing vulnerability, increasing the stability
of farming systems, and buffering households against climate-related
risks. Moreover, whole-landscape carbon accounting (combining REDD, A/R
CDM and the gaps in between) may provide a basis fore investment in
trees managed by farmers and rural communities.
The
objective of the Global Research Project on Climate Change is to
improve the stability of farming systems and livelihood strategies of
smallholder farmers in the face of current climate variability as well
as long-term climate change, through the increased use of trees for
intensification, diversification and buffering of farming systems. The
GRP focuses on four areas: vulnerability assessments, impact of climate
change on agroforestry systems; adaptation to climate change; and
synergies in agroforestry systems between climate change adaptation and
mitigation.Nairobi, Kenya) Call for Papers: Science with Africa (The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and
Intelligence in Science (ISC) are inviting submissions of papers for
