Postdoc Researcher in coupled human environment systems (Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher to work at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) on a project investigating coupled human-environment systems in selected areas of rural China. Specifically, we are looking for researchers with interests in spatial modeling of human-environment interactions. We will use methods that integrate natural and social science approaches to proxy alterations in human welfare levels and changes in local and regional environmental indicators over time and space. Possible methodologies may include spatially explicit statistical approaches as well as Bayesian network analyses to estimate the determinants of and the linkages between observed environmental changes and rural welfare levels. The results of the project are expected to shed light on the human-environment interactions in rapidly changing circumstances in order to propose adequate policy and management options. The successful candidate should have a strong background in the application of quantitative analysis of economic, social, and/or ecological systems. (S)he should preferably speak Chinese language and/or have previous work experiences in China.Halle (Saale), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany)

2009 Watson International Scholars of the Environment (The Watson International Scholars of the Environment program brings mid-career environmental leaders from universities, governments, and nongovernmental organizations throughout Africa to Brown University for advanced training in land-change history, sciences, and policies, providing them with the context to enhance the sustainable development capacity in their countries. The opportunity offers an intensive program in sustainable land-use studies to provide mastery of critical concepts, relevant tools, and transferable processes necessary for managing land and ecosystems. Supported by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation and endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the program offers scholars time away from their daily responsibilities to learn new skills with a community of scholars applying both theoretical and practice approaches to real world environmental issues. Full time for three and a half months, participants are involved in courses, workshops, field trips, symposia, mentorship, professional networking, and research projects. The Watson International Scholars of the Environment are active participants, not passive students. All participants will take part in a foundational seminar on African environmental history. Module units focus on land-use science and policy. Drawing on the resources of Brown University, participants will prepare a study on land-use change and policy responses. Participants will integrate data from across disciplines and discuss how their research can inform sound decision-making. Investment in these leaders is strategic: participants are men and women capable of creating lasting and immediately favorable impacts on the sustainable development of their home institutions, eco-regions, and nations. Accordingly, participants are expected to be at a mid-point within their careers in environmental management, science, and policy fields. The program seeks individuals who want to forge new linkages among ideas and issues, to develop networks among leaders facing similar land-use issues, and to explore alliances with relevant colleagues and institutions for improved personal and institutional effectiveness.Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA)
PhD Position in Arctic social ecological resilience (We seek to recruit a candidate for a PhD position in a trans-disciplinary project that will examine social-ecological resilience of Arctic ecosystems to changes in hydrological flows. The candidate will develop a conceptual framework and empirical methods to investigate how globally driven hydrological changes could alter the social-ecological resilience of Arctic ecosystems. This research includes reviewing evidence for possible hydrologically triggered abrupt threshold changes or regime shifts in Arctic ecosystems, the synthesis of existing social, ecological and physical data to map social-ecological resilience in the Arctic, and the construction of minimal social-ecological models of Arctic regime shifts. This PhD project is part of a larger research project on Pan-Arctic ice-water-biogeochemical system responses and social-ecological resilience effects in a warming climate, which is coordinated from the Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology and involves collaborators from the Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research and the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University as well as international collaborators.Stockholm University, Sweden)
